Downtown Bookworks is a children’s publishing and packaging company whose mission is to raise a new generation of book lovers such that every one of their books is carefully designed to engage, inspire, and feel good in small hands. They would like to hire an intern to work in their office two days a week.

SmileyBooks, an imprint founded by New York Times bestselling author and broadcaster, Tavis Smiley, is looking for an editorial intern for Spring 2012 to work in its New York City office. This is a wonderful opportunity to see how good ideas become great books. Interns will have the opportunity to experience New York’s publishing world with a 25-year industry veteran. Assignments will include administrative duties, reading and reviewing queries and proposals, and participation in editorial meetings. While this internship is unpaid, a small stipend may be given upon completion of the internship for exemplary work.

Literary Agency Internship Opportunity!

Charlotte Sheedy Literary Agency is a boutique literary agency that has been in business over 25 years, and the agents there are proud to represent quality authors and illustrators of Children’s and YA books, as well as upmarket Adult fiction and non-fiction across all genres. Some of CSLA’s clients include: Daniel Handler, the mastermind behind the Lemony Snicket series as well a variety of adult novels, Mark Kurlansky, author of Salt: A World History, Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, YA author Nina Malkin, Pulitzer Prize winning historian Diane McWhorter, and prolific illustrators, Maira Kalman and Frank Viva.

Duties for will be both editorial and clerical: reading author queries and current client works, writing reader’s reports, proofreading proposals, scanning, filing, sorting mail, and general office tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about all aspects of publishing – how books are discovered, polished, sold, and brought to market.

Candidates should be motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, and responsible, with excellent communication skills and an ability to multi-task in a fast-paced working environment. Some experience critically evaluating fiction and non-fiction work is preferred, as well as a love of books and a strong interest in the publishing business.

February Partners, a boutique public relations and marketing firm based in New York’s Union Square, has an opening for a Public Relations and Social Media Marketing intern. They are looking for an extremely motivated, detail-oriented intern to assist on publicity and social media marketing campaigns for high profile books and authors. This is a great opportunity gain invaluable hands-on experience in the world of public relations, marketing, and book publishing.

They are looking for candidates with strong writing and organizational skills, experience with online and social media, and the ability to communicate effectively. Responsibilities include supporting executive staff, performing administrative duties, and assisting with major publicity and marketing campaigns. Previous PR experience is a plus, but not necessary. Candidates need to be able to work 15-20 hours a week beginning January 2012-March 2012.
