Welcome Back, Students!

Dear Colleagues and Graduate Students,

I hope you enjoyed your summer break. Welcome back to Pace University. We have 29 new students and 52 current students enrolled in the MS Publishing program for the Fall of 2016; a total of 81 students this semester. The faculty and staff look forward to working with you and assisting you this term.

Please mark your calendars for the following publishing events. Lisa Sharkey will give the Fall 2016 semester lecture as the David Pecker Visiting Professor on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Ms. Sharkey is Senior Vice President/Director of Creative Development for HarperCollins and is raskinserving as David J. Pecker Visiting Professor for the 2016-17 academic year. Her lecture will take place at 163 William Street, 18th floor at the downtown NYC campus from 6-8pm. She will discuss issues currently facing the publishing industry. Refreshments will be served.

Another event and date to place on your calendar is the Student Orientation which will take place on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at 5pm -6 pm outside Multi-Media Lab, Pace Midtown Center (551 Fifth Avenue, 8th floor). Please make every effort to attend both events.

Welcome back for the Fall 2016 semester!
I hope you all had a wonderful summer and that you are ready for an exciting semester in the MS in Publishing program!

Other regular weekly features include: The Link of the Week, Jobs of the Week, and Around Town: Books and Magazine Events in NYC. We also post monthly Alumni in the Spotlight Interviews, Faculty/Advisory Board in the Spotlight features as well as our Media Roundups and Reports from the Trenches (we love to have students blog about field trips, guest lectures, books or magazines they have read etc. so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to contribute) and Volunteer and Events postings.

In addition, we also post numerous Internship and Employment opportunities so be sure to bookmark the blog. As you embark on your internship search don’t forget to go to the Internship Resources tab . We have been working hard to update this resource and there are great links here to assist you with your search.

The blog also includes Faculty and Staff Bios —a great way to learn more about the backgrounds and accomplishments of your professors and publishing staff ! In addition, the Publishing Links that run along the left side of the blog are also a great resource for networking and additional educational opportunities.
This semester we also have a number of great events on campus for you to attend including an on-site visit to the Meredith offices (click to read more about Meredith ;date and details to follow) and a fascinating panel on the Power of Poetry in Today’s World on Nov.9th at Pace’s downtown campus (details to follow) and co-sponsored by the WNBA . Mark your calendars!
I would also like to take this time to thank you for your contributions to and feedback on the blog and we hope that you are finding it to be a useful resource. Please feel free to email me (jdenning@pace.edu) with any suggestions or comments you have. We love to hear from you and are always looking for new ways to provide you with useful information. And, for students interested in getting putting together some writing samples, putting together a post for the blog is a great way to do that.

Job Alert! Advertising and Promotion Coordinator at HarperCollins

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS LOGOHarper Collins is looking for a new Advertising and Promotion Coordinator who will be focusing on their celebrity/pop culture-focused imprint (Dey Street) and a literary fiction imprint (Perennial).

The Advertising and Promotion Department is seeking a Coordinator to act as a project manager and designer, working with imprint(s) to manage, design, and produce a variety of print and digital ads, social media assets, printed items, and digital catalogs.

Responsibilities:

Specifically, the Advertising and Promotions Coordinator:

  • Works directly with marketing departments for assigned imprints: Designs assets for social media, digital title marketing, and web and print advertising. Researches and designs printed items such as postcards, brochures, promotional items, signage, and swag for conventions.
  • Works with marketing to schedule and maintain on-time delivery of print jobs, social media, and advertising; works with outside vendors on estimates and printing, creates purchase orders.
  • Manages catalog for assigned imprints: maintains schedule, routes, and edits copy for eCatalog workflow.
  • Completes administrative tasks for assigned imprints including: coding invoices, digital asset management, and egalleys QA.

Qualifications:

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite programs and strong design skills required: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
  • Working knowledge of print production encouraged
  • Knowledge of HTML and Flash a plus
  • Must possess skill to prioritize multiple ongoing projects
