The giving spirits of humanity as a whole are more exposed during the holiday season; Operation Christmas Child, the Salvation Army donation pots on street corners and in front of department stores, and donation campaigns from companies of every kind. Just this morning, I got an email from Duane Reade to tell me about their partnership with City Harvest and how I can donate to their cause to feed the hungry in New York City.
While food and nonprofit support is the object of many giving campaigns and fundraisers, Veronica Roth, author of the Divergent series, has added another flavor to the mix: books. In partnership with First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides access to new books for children in need, Roth launched her #AbnegationDonation campaign.
“For me, the whole Divergent series is about the question of what selflessness is and what it means,” Roth told PW, about her inspiration for the campaign. “This is a way to do something good with that question. And, I’m in the holiday spirit, so it’s good timing all around.”
HarperCollins and First Book already have a longstanding relationship, but Roth made their partnership even more personal with her campaign.
“They do incredible things,” Roth said. “We talked about how they work, and I was very impressed by their mission. It seemed like a natural fit for me to get involved.”
For every $2.50 that is donated to First Book through the #AbnegationDonation page on the First Book website during December, HarperCollins will donate a new copy of Divergent to First Book.
