Intern Wanted

 

The Perseus Books Group offers paid internship opportunities in five of our offices in areas such as editorial, design, marketing, publicity, sales, subsidiary rights and production.

Internship opportunities are available at: New York, NY; Boston, MA, Berkeley, CA, Philadelphia, PA; and Minneapolis, MN

The internship program at Perseus Books Group aims to provide an overall introduction to the book publishing industry. The intern will gain hands-on experience and learn many of the ins and outs of the publishing industry. Flexibility, the ability to remain calm under pressure, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, Microsoft computer competency and social media literacy are required.

The Fall 2015 Internship Program will last 10 weeks beginning in September and extending through December. Interns will be assigned positions within one or several of our specialized departments:
*Editorial * Publicity * Contracts
*Design * Marketing * Subsidiary Rights
*Production * Sales * Cartography

Internships are determined based on the applicant’s interests and qualifications and on our business needs. When you apply, please be specific as to your area of interest and preferred location(s) in your cover letter.

Interns will work in conjunction with professionals, helping with day to day responsibilities, departmental projects and may have the opportunity to attend departmental meetings.

Requirements
• College student or recent graduate
• Minimum commitment of 20 hours /week
• Strong interest in book publishing
• Exceptional writing and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and take initiative
• Very detail oriented

This is a paid internship opportunity. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate. Interns must be able to make arrangements to live in the metropolitan area in which the internship resides, over the course of the program. While we are able to provide some informal advice, we do not have an official housing program.

Link of the Week: Society of Publication Designers

The Society of Publication Designers, or SPD, is dedicated to promoting and encouraging excellence in editorial design. Members are art directors, designers, photo editors, editors and graphics professionals. Since drafting its charter in 1965, the SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and online editorial professionals. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting our common history; the efforts of the Society and its members also serve to educate and enlighten the public about the importance of magazines and online publications.

The activities of SPD promote the role of its members as journalists and partners in the editorial process, as well as fostering new generations of publication designers through educational outreach and scholarship opportunities. Member benefits include significant discounts on events, entry fees, Adobe software and training opportunities, complimentary copies of the SPD Annual, and more.

Make sure to check out the SPD-U PUB(lications) CRAWL, the annual all-day event that features a tour of two magazine and/or design offices to give an in-depth look at how things there really work. Link of the Week: New York Foundation for the Arts

The New York Foundation for the Arts is an organization built to empower artists, authors, and all types of creative people in New York. They hold events and serve as a nexus bringing together patrons, fans, and creators. Though we at Pace Publishing often focus on the business of books, it is important to take a step back and remember that the bottom line isn’t the only thing publishers should be worried about. The craft and beauty of both writing and design are important, too. NYFA is a great resource to check out when looking for new exhibitions, freelance designers, or posting your own work for jobs.

The Soho Apple Store (103 Prince Street, Manhattan) offers many free workshops and classes.  This Monday they have a free Photoshop class at 1:00 pm. Learn design secrets and how to adjust and edit photos. Click the above link to register.

 

June 18, 2013: Secrets behind Book Publishing @ the Strand

Authors, agents, and editors will unite at the Strand Books Store (829 Broadway, Manhattan) for a discussion on the ins and outs of publishing. They will “de-mystify” the industry and give insight into their own career. This event begins at 7:00 pm and costs $15.00 (in the form of a gift card to the store.)

June 19, 2013: Questlove at Barnes and Noble

Roots drummer Questlove has written a book called Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove and will be promoting it at the Union Square Barnes and Noble (33 East 17th Street, Manhattan.)  This book isn’t just a memoir, but a personal look at fakes, philosophers, and music.

June 20, 2013: John Donne, Re-Done

At the New York Public Library (5th Avenue and 42nd Street, Manhattan) an event will be held honoring the British master poet John Donne. Contemporary poets will be reading their own work alongside Donne’s, and discuss his influence on their writing. This event begins at 1:15 and is first come, first served.

June 21, 2013: William Shakespeare

At the New York Public Library (5th Avenue and 42nd Street, Manhattan) discover the world of Shakespeare within the stacks. How have his words been translated from Renaissance England to today’s New York? This event begins at 2:15 and is free.
