HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD MIDNIGHT BOOK RELEASE!!

HP Release4.thumbnailStrand Bookstore
July 30: 8:00PM July 31: 12:45AM
Have you been a Harry Potter fan since day one? Did you sink into a deep depression after you finished the epilogue of book 7? Then today is your day.

Join us at Strand to celebrate the MIDNIGHT RELEASE of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts I & II, which–for those of you not on Pottermore–is the continuation of Harry’s story as a wizard and as a father after his kids have started at Hogwarts. Hop in line at 8pm on Saturday 7/30, and hang out with HP devotees while competing in trivia, winning prizes, and geeking out about our old friend Harry–costumes are encouraged! We’ll also have a state-of-the-art photobooth from OM Digital to commemorate this magical night, and treats to eat from Fat Witch.

At 10:30pm after the store closes, we will move the line inside.

When the clock strikes midnight and it’s Harry’s birthday, you’ll all receive your books! We will not accept any new members to the line after 12:45am on Sunday 7/31/16.

A few things to note: You must purchase your copy of the book before getting in line; you may do so by clicking the link below, or by placing your order at the store and holding on to your receipt (which will be your ticket to the event).  Your purchase only reserves your book, not your place in line. As such, the first people in line will be the first to receive the book. It’s going to be a blast!

Get in line outside Strand to get your copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts I & IIThe line will start at 8PM. The book is $29.99. We recommend you purchase your book online in advance to reserve a copy.  Payment is required at the time of purchase from the website–please do not select “pay when you pick up,” as these orders will not be fulfilled.

November 13- Pushcart Prize: 40th Anniversary

Village Community School
272 W. 10th St. (between Greenwich St. & Washington St.) screen_shot_2015-11-10_at_11.31.56_am
New York, NY  10014

Time: 7:00 pm

Cost: $10

In the mid-Seventies, while battling alcoholism and working as a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Raymond Carver wrote a story called “So Much Water So Close to Home.” Carver wasn’t much satisfied with it, but when Bill Henderson — on the hunt for small-press writing for his first Pushcart Prize anthology — wrote to Spectrum, the university’s student newspaper, asking for potential submissions, a young editor named Marc Louria nominated Carver’s story. The rest is history: The story served as source material for two acclaimed movies — the first very high-profile (Robert Altman’s 1993 Short Cuts), the second more obscure (Ray Lawrence’s 2006 Jindabyne) — and Carver went on to become an icon of the short-story form before his death at the age of fifty. Such success stories are commonplace across the improbable history of Henderson’s Pushcart Prize, which this year celebrates its fortieth anniversary of championing noncommercial publishing. Zadie Smith, Colum McCann, and several other figures of literary renown will read tonight to pay tribute to the Pushcart project.

November 14- Matt Zoller Seitz: Mad Men Carousel

Bookcourt
163 Court St.
Brooklyn, NY 11201event_seitz

Time: 4:00 pm

Cost: Free

There was a time when rock criticism and even film criticism were written off as inferior responses to inferior mediums. Without this context, Matt Zoller Seitz‘s forthcoming Mad Men Carousel, an ambitious episode-by-episode guide to all seven seasons, might well be dismissed as one really excessive fanboy ramble. But it’s so much more, because — thanks in part to the game-changing show — TV is so much more. Mad Men‘s 92 episodes are ripe for dissection, and of all the critic literati (criterati?), MZS is up to the task. His essayistic Vulture recaps, which more often than not would delve into some brilliant next-level analysis, are collected here for the first time. Seitz’s attention to the show’s complexities will enthrall longtime viewers wanting to relive the magic, and background on its many historical references to events, locations, and consumer products further helps to put the series in perspective. Catch him as he reads, signs, and answers all your Draper-related questions this afternoon.

About Here & There:

It was supposed to be a simple proof of concept. The physics were sound. Over one hundred teleportation experiments had already been successfully performed . . .

Debate rages over whether the Reidier Test’s disastrous outcome resulted from human error, government conspiracy, or sabotage. No one had actual knowledge of the truth. But hidden from the public eye, there exists a government report commissioned from criminal psychologist Dr. Hilary Kahn, chronicling the events that took place.

Dr. Kahn disappeared without a trace.

Now her son Danny has unearthed and
revealed the report, fueling controversy
over the details of Reidier’s quest to reforge the fabric of reality and hold his family together. Exposed with little chance of finding his mother, Danny goes underground to investigate. But nothing can prepare him for what he discovers.

In this thrilling saga, a paradigm-shattering feat may alter humanity’s future as quantum entanglement and teleportation collide.
